What to Wear - Basic Do's and Don'ts

Picking your clothes sometimes feels like the hardest part about preparing for a photo session.  But it doesn't have to be! Just follow these simple Do's and Don'ts and you'll be off to a great start.

Do pick clothes that are true to your style and that you feel amazing wearing.

Don't dress the whole family in the same color or pattern.  You want to COORDINATE but not match.

Do wear patterns but mix them with coordinating solids.  I recommend letting one person's outfit (or one piece of a person's outfit) be the inspiration for the color pallet.

Don't wear logos or graphic t-shirts.  Logos and graphics can be distracting in a photo.  Of course, there are exceptions in which a graphic tee would fit with the style but generally speaking there are better choices.

Do wear layers and accessorize.  Sweaters, jackets, scarves, jewelry, hats, even your shoes can all add interest to a picture.  They are also a great way to completely change a look without changing the entire outfit.

Don't wear old sneakers.  You don't want to spend time and effort on a fantastic outfit and then wear a pair of old sneakers.  Finish the look with shoes that match the style.

Do pay attention to the details.  Make sure your clothes are clean, stain-free, and wrinkle-free.  This is always more noticeable on camera than in person.

Don't forget about your socks.  Most people don't think about their socks when it comes to pictures but they sometimes do show so please no florescent green socks. (True story) No florescent anything for that matter!

Do remember to wear your smile and just have fun.  I know, cheesy but honestly it's the most important thing.  If you are enjoying yourself and smiling, you're going to look good too!
